Set in the early 1900s, in an era in which the phenomenon of the feminist political movement begins to shake the British nation, the young Lana Benton, a guest of the gloomy Bunny Hall orphanage, is the only one to suspect that her best friend Carole has not simply run away. The secret correspondence between Carole and a mysterious "Frenchman" pushes Lana to investigate so much that she finds herself surviving in the balance between the mortal world and the fantastic kingdom of Corolla which, under the cruel influence of the terrifying Mr. Kyn, the insensitive owl Velenia, and hungry colonies of tar rabbits, is inexorably perishing.
